In 1962, she moved to the United States Army Research Laboratory. Here, she focused on protecting the United States Army from electronic warfare. This means she worked to make sure enemy signals or devices couldn't harm U.S. soldiers or equipment.

Joy worked to increase the number of soldiers who survived on the battlefield. She also improved how strong the United States Army was against different threats. She even designed special sensors to protect human eyes from powerful laser threats.

She developed technologies that could "jam" signals. One of her inventions was a multi-spectral jammer.
