The Life of Juan Bautista Cabrera
Early Life and New Ideas
Juan Bautista Cabrera was born in Benissa, Spain, on April 23, 1837. When he was young, he joined a religious group called the Piarists. He became a priest in this order in 1853.
Later, he started learning about different Christian ideas, known as Protestant ideas. He learned about them through letters. Because of his new beliefs, he had to leave Spain. In the summer of 1863, he found safety in Gibraltar. There, he got married and regularly attended both Methodist and Anglican churches.
Starting a New Church
After a big change in Spain's government in 1868, called the Revolution of 1868, Cabrera could return home. He became a pastor, leading a church in Seville.
In 1880, a special meeting (called a synod) took place in Seville. At this meeting, the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church was officially formed. This church is now a member of the Anglican Communion, a global family of churches.
The new church used a special way of worship. It combined parts of Anglican worship with old Spanish Christian traditions called the Mozarabic Rite. Cabrera also wrote new songs and prayers for the church. He spent his career writing lyrics for many existing songs and translating other hymns into Spanish.
Becoming a Bishop
In 1894, Juan Bautista Cabrera became a bishop. He was made a bishop by three bishops from the Church of Ireland. One of them was William Plunket, who was the Archbishop of Dublin.
Cabrera served as the bishop of the Spanish Reformed Church until he passed away. He died in 1916 in Madrid.
