The Alicante Province (called Alacant in Valencian) is a busy and beautiful part of Spain. It's the fifth most populated province in Spain and the second largest in the Valencian Community. You can find it on the southeast coast, right by the Mediterranean Sea.

Its capital city is also called Alicante. This city is a port with a university and lots of shops. It has cool old buildings like the Santa Bárbara Castle.

Important Cities in Alicante Province

Besides the capital, there are other important cities:

  • Elche: Home to over 215,000 people, famous for its many palm trees and a big shoe-making industry.
  • Torrevieja: Around 100,000 people live here. It's a popular tourist spot known for its international Habaneras singing contest.
  • Orihuela: With about 75,000 residents, this city is important for farming.
  • Benidorm: About 67,000 people call Benidorm home. It's often called the "Mediterranean Manhattan" because of its many tall buildings.
  • Alcoi: This city has about 60,000 people and is a center for making textiles (like fabrics).
  • Elda: Around 55,000 people live here, and it's another important city for the shoe industry.

Rivers and Mountains of Alicante

The most important river in the province is the Segura River, located in the south. This river provides water to many cities like Alicante, Elche, Torrevieja, and Orihuela. Other rivers include the Vinalopó River, Serpis River, Amadorio River, Ravine of the Sheeps, and Monnegre River.

The biggest mountain in Alicante is Aitana. Other notable mountains are Mariola, Puig Bell, Maigmó, and Gold Head, which is close to Alicante city. Along the coast, you'll find islands. The most important one is Tabarca Island, and there's also the Benidorm Island. A famous landmark on the coast is the Peñón de Ifach, a large rock in Calpe.

What People Do in Alicante Province

The people in Alicante province are busy with different activities:

  • Tourism: Many visitors come to enjoy the beaches and sights.
  • Industry: Factories here make things like shoes, carpets, toys, dolls, and textiles.
  • Agriculture: Farmers use modern irrigation to grow crops like oranges, lemons, tomatoes, almonds, and grapes for wine.

There are also two important universities: the University of Alicante and the Miguel Hernández University.
