Exploring the Prebaetic System
Where are the Prebaetic Mountains?
The Prebaetic System is not one long, unbroken chain of mountains. Instead, it's a series of separate mountain ranges. It doesn't start in the far west of Spain. It begins near a town called Martos, in the Sierra Sur de Jaén.
These mountains stretch across eastern Andalusia, through the Region of Murcia, and reach the Mediterranean Sea in the southern Valencian Community.
Highest Peaks and Important Ranges
The highest mountain here is La Sagra, which is part of the Sierra de la Sagra. Other tall ranges include Sierra de Segura and Sierra de Cazorla. The Sierra de María, in northern Almeria Province, is special. It's part of both the Prebaetic and Penibaetic mountain systems.
How the Mountains Formed
Geology of the Prebaetic System
The Prebaetic System is like a younger sibling to the Subbaetic System. They share similar rock types and how they were formed. The rocks that make up these mountains were once at the bottom of a relatively shallow sea. To the north of the Prebaetic System's eastern part, you'll find the Iberian System mountains.
