The Serra de Crevillent (also known as Sierra de Crevillente in Spanish) is a mountain range in southern Spain. It stretches across parts of the Region of Murcia and the province of Alicante. The highest point in this range is a peak called Sant Gaietà. This peak stands 835 meters (about 2,740 feet) tall and is located near the town of Crevillent.

The Serra de Crevillent is found between the Vinalopó river and another mountain range, the Sierra de Abanilla. The Sierra de Abanilla is like a natural extension of the Serra de Crevillent. It reaches into the Region of Murcia.

Discovering the History of Serra de Crevillent

This mountain range has a long and interesting history. People have lived here for thousands of years.

Ancient Life: Stone Age Settlements

Long ago, during the Upper Paleolithic period, people lived in the Serra de Crevillent. This was the later part of the Stone Age. Archaeologists have found proof of these early settlements. These findings were made at a place called Ratlla del Bubo. The tools and remains found there show that people from the Solutrean culture lived in this area.

Water Systems from Al-Andalus

In the 13th century, this region was part of Al-Andalus. This was a time when much of Spain was ruled by Muslims. During this period, a clever water system was built. It used underground channels called qanats to bring water to the town of Crevillent. One of the most famous parts of this old water system that you can still see today is the Els Pontets aqueduct.

The Legend of Jaume el Barbut

In the 19th century, the Serra de Crevillent became known for something else. It was a hiding place for a famous bandit named Jaume el Barbut. He was known for his raids and adventures in the area.
