His Education and Teaching Career
Juan Carlos Monedero studied economics and then earned degrees in political science and sociology. He completed these studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM).
He continued his education in Germany, studying for his doctorate from 1989 to 1992. His main professor there was Klaus von Beyme, a political scientist. Monedero finished his doctorate in 1996 back at the UCM. His research was about why East Germany dissolved.
Since 1992, Monedero has been a professor of political science at the UCM. He teaches and researches topics like how governments work and the political systems in Spain and South America. He has also been a visiting professor at universities in Europe, like London and Berlin, and in South America, including Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela.
His Role in Politics
Juan Carlos Monedero has often spoken about political changes in South America. He supported the "Bolivarian Revolution," which was a big political movement in Venezuela. He believed that these changes in South America could be a good example for the rest of the world.
Early Political Ideas
Monedero is also connected to the 15-M movement in Spain. This was a large protest movement where many people gathered to ask for changes in their country. Some people called him a leader of this movement. However, Monedero said that no one person could be the leader of such a big movement. He felt that the 15-M movement was very important for democracy in Spain.
Joining Podemos
In January 2014, Monedero helped start a new political party called Podemos. He worked with other thinkers and activists, like Pablo Iglesias. Their goal was to bring together left-wing groups in Spain. They wanted to challenge the way politics and money worked in Europe at that time.
Questions About Funding
There were public discussions about money Monedero reportedly received from a foundation in Venezuela. Some media outlets reported on these payments. This led to questions from other political groups, like the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), who asked for more details.
Later, in 2022, some audio recordings became public. These recordings suggested that certain people, including a former police official and two major Spanish media figures, might have tried to spread negative information about Monedero and other politicians. This raised questions about the reasons behind the earlier reports.
