Studying and Teaching
Juan Carlos Monedero studied economics, which is about how money and goods are made and used. He also earned degrees in political science and sociology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). Sociology is the study of how people live and interact in groups.
He continued his studies in Germany from 1989 to 1992. There, he worked on his doctorate, which is a very high university degree. His main research was about why East Germany changed so much. He finished his doctorate at UCM in 1996.
Since 1992, Monedero has been a professor of political science at UCM. He teaches and researches topics like how governments are set up. He also studies political systems in South America and Spain. He has been a guest professor at universities in Europe and South America.
Political Ideas and Work
Juan Carlos Monedero has openly supported certain political changes in South America. He once called Hugo Chávez "the last liberator of South America." He believed that the political changes happening there were a good example for the world. He thought these changes could help solve problems in the global economic system.
Monedero is also connected to the 15-M movement in Spain. This movement involved many people protesting for changes in their country. Some news groups called him a "leader" of this movement. However, he said that no one person could be the only leader. He believed the 15-M movement was very good for democracy in Spain.
In January 2014, Monedero helped start the Podemos political project. He worked with other thinkers and activists, like Pablo Iglesias. Their goal was to bring together groups in Spain who wanted to change the European political and financial system.
Questions About Funding
Some news reports, like from El Mundo, claimed that Monedero received a large amount of money. They suggested this money came from a foundation in Venezuela. These claims caused some discussion and questions. People wondered if these payments were properly reported for tax purposes. In 2015, another political party, the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), asked for more information about these alleged payments.
The truthfulness of these claims and the reasons behind them have been questioned. In 2022, some audio recordings became public. These recordings suggested that a former police officer and two major Spanish media figures might have worked together. The recordings implied they tried to spread negative stories about Monedero and other political figures.
