Juan Carlos Tedesco (born February 5, 1944 – died May 8, 2017) was an Argentine expert in education. He served as the Minister of Education for Argentina from December 2007 to July 2009.
Life and Career
Juan Carlos Tedesco was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1944. He studied at the University of Buenos Aires and earned a degree in Philosophy and Letters in 1968. After graduating, he taught Educational History at several universities, including La Plata, El Comahue, and La Pampa. His first book, Education and Society in Argentina, 1800-1945, was published in 1972.
In 1976, Tedesco began working for UNESCO, a part of the United Nations that promotes education and culture. He was an education policy specialist for their Latin American Development and Education Project. Later, he became a director for UNESCO centers in Caracas (1982-1986) and Santiago (1986-1992). During Argentina's last military government, many teachers and students faced difficulties. Tedesco wrote a book about these problems called The Authoritarian Educational Agenda with Cecilia Braslavsky in 1983.
His experience led him to become the Director of the IBE in Geneva, Switzerland. He held this important role until 1997. After that, he led the UNESCO office in Buenos Aires until 2004. Tedesco then returned to teaching at universities near Buenos Aires: the private Universidad de San Andrés and the public National University of Tres de Febrero. In 2006, he was appointed to a special commission for teacher training by the Education Minister, Daniel Filmus.
In October 2007, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner became the President of Argentina. On December 10, 2007, Juan Carlos Tedesco was sworn in as the new Minister of Education. He worked in this role until July 20, 2009. After a change in the government's team, he was replaced by Alberto Sileoni. Tedesco then became the Executive Director of a special unit that planned and evaluated Argentina's education system. Juan Carlos Tedesco passed away in Buenos Aires on May 8, 2017, at the age of 73, after a long illness.
