Juan Conchillos Falco (born 1641, died 1711) was a talented Spanish painter. He lived during a time called the Baroque period, which was known for its dramatic and detailed art.

The Life of Juan Conchillos Falco

Juan Conchillos Falco was born in Valencia, Spain. He came from a well-known family. For many years, he studied art in the workshop of Esteban March. Esteban March was known for being a bit unusual!

In 1670, Juan moved to Madrid. There, he met up with an old friend from his student days, José García Hidalgo. José helped him find painting jobs. Sadly, most of these early works are now lost. While in Madrid, Juan continued to learn and improve his skills. He spent time copying paintings by famous old artists, often called the Old Masters, in museums.

When he returned to Valencia, Juan brought all his new knowledge with him. He helped introduce these new ideas and styles into the art world of Valencia.

His Art and Famous Drawings

Juan Conchillos Falco painted several scenes about "The Christ of Beirut" for a church. However, these paintings were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War much later. A painting of St. Bartholomew by him can still be seen in a church in Murcia.

In Alicante, he created religious pictures and scenes about the Holy Face of Jesus for the Monasterio de la Santa Faz [es]. Some of his artworks are also kept in private collections today.

Juan is perhaps most famous for his amazing drawings. He even had a special art school at his home where he taught students. He really focused on using charcoal for drawing. People say he made one charcoal drawing every single night! He also used a type of paint called gouache.

Many of his detailed drawings, which he carefully dated, are now kept in important places. You can find them in the Museo del Prado and the Biblioteca Nacional de España, among other collections. Some of his well-known students included Vicente Bru, Evaristo Muñoz, and even his own son, Manuel Antonio.

Later Life

Later in his life, Juan Conchillos Falco became ill with a condition called palsy. This made him permanently unable to move properly, and he had to stop painting. Not long after, he completely lost his eyesight. He passed away in Valencia in 1711.
