Juan E. Gilbert (born February 27, 1969) is an American computer scientist. He is also a researcher, inventor, and teacher. Dr. Gilbert strongly believes in having many different people in computer science. He has worked hard to help more people from groups that are not always seen in computing. Because of his efforts, he has been recognized by many groups and the United States government.

In 2012, Dr. Gilbert received a special award at Clemson University. He was given the first Presidential Endowed Chair. Thanks to his work, Clemson University had a lot more African American computer science professors and students in 2012.

Education and Early Career

Juan Gilbert earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2000. He studied at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. His special project for his Ph.D. was about a smart computer program that could teach people.

Dr. Gilbert has received many important awards for his work. These awards show how much he has helped in science and technology.

• 2018: He won the Computing Research Association's A. Nico Habermann Award. This award is for people who help make computing more diverse.
• 2013: The Chronicle of Higher Education named him one of Ten Tech Innovators. This means he was seen as one of the top people creating new things in technology.
• 2013: He received the Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award. This award honors his scientific work and his efforts to make computing more welcoming for everyone.
• 2012: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) gave him the Chairman's Award. This was for his work in making technology easier for everyone to use.
• 2012: The Root magazine named him one of the "100 Black Influencers and Achievers."
• 2012: He received an award for mentoring students in research. This came from the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT).
• 2012: The city of Hamilton, Ohio named February "Dr. Juan Gilbert Month." He also received the Key to the city.
• 2012: He won a big award for a video about Prime III. This was the world's first voting system that everyone could use.
• Presidential Award: He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. This award is given by the National Science Foundation.
• 2011: He became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This is a very high honor for scientists.
