Early Life and Politics
Juan Idiarte Borda came from the Soriano area in Uruguay. He later represented this area in the country's parliament, known as the Chamber of Deputies. He was a member of the Colorado Party. This political party was very powerful and led the country for many years.
Becoming President of Uruguay
On March 21, 1894, Duncan Stewart was the temporary President of Uruguay. He stepped down from his role, and Juan Idiarte Borda took his place. Idiarte Borda then became the official President.
Challenges During His Time in Office
President Idiarte Borda's time as leader was quite difficult. He faced many problems, including disagreements over business, different ideas about how the country should be run, and personal conflicts. These issues happened during a time when Uruguay was experiencing a civil war. The ruling Colorado Party itself also had many internal disagreements.
Important Public Projects
Despite the challenges, President Idiarte Borda's government also worked on important projects for the country. These included improving the Port of Montevideo, which is a major harbor. His government also helped create a national bank. These projects aimed to help Uruguay's economy and development.
His Death
On August 25, 1897, President Idiarte Borda was killed by a man named Avelino Arredondo. This happened with a revolver. Earlier, a newspaper had wrongly said that Arredondo was involved in a previous attack attempt.
President Idiarte Borda's family had warned him about a plan to kill him. Even though the killer was known to support another politician, José Batlle y Ordóñez, Batlle was able to deny any involvement. This event was the only time a president has been killed while in office in Uruguay's history.
After his death, Juan Idiarte Borda's story was often overshadowed by the fame of José Batlle y Ordóñez. Batlle later became a very important and long-serving President of Uruguay.
