Juan Lindolfo de los Reyes Cuestas (born January 6, 1837 – died June 21, 1905) was an important politician from Uruguay. He served as the 18th President of Uruguay twice. His first time as president was from 1897 to 1899, and his second term was from 1899 to 1903.

Early Life and Career
Juan Lindolfo Cuestas was a key member of the Colorado Party. This political party was very powerful in Uruguay for more than 100 years. Before becoming president, he held several important government jobs.
- He was the Minister of Finance from 1875 to 1876.
- He served as Minister of Finance again from 1880 to 1882.
- He also worked as the Minister of Justice and Education from 1884 to 1886.
Juan Lindolfo Cuestas had a son named Juan Cuestas, who later became a diplomat.
President of Uruguay
First Time as President
Juan Lindolfo Cuestas first became president during a very difficult time. On August 25, 1897, the president at that time, Juan Idiarte Borda, was killed. He was shot by a person named Avelino Arredondo.
Because Juan Lindolfo Cuestas was the head of the Senate, he took over as president. He served in this role for about two years. After that, he temporarily gave the presidency to José Batlle y Ordóñez.
Second Time as President
However, Juan Lindolfo Cuestas soon became president again. He continued to serve until 1903. At that time, he once more stepped down, and José Batlle y Ordóñez became president.
Challenges During His Presidency
The time Juan Lindolfo Cuestas spent as president was full of challenges. There were problems not only because the previous president was killed. There were also many disagreements within his own Colorado Party.
In addition, there were conflicts with the opposing Blanco Party. These disagreements often led to small civil wars in Uruguay throughout the late 1800s.
After His Presidency
After Juan Lindolfo Cuestas left the presidency for the second time in 1903, Uruguay soon faced another civil war. A very important battle in this war was the Battle of Masoller in 1904. Juan Lindolfo Cuestas passed away in 1905.
