Juan Laurentino Ortiz, a famous Argentine poet.

Juan Laurentino Ortiz (born June 11, 1896 – died September 2, 1978) was an important Argentine poet. He was born in a small town called Puerto Ruiz in the Entre Ríos Province of Argentina. He passed away in Paraná, the capital city of the same province, when he was 82 years old.

Juan Laurentino Ortiz spent his childhood in the wild areas of Montiel. This beautiful landscape deeply influenced his poetry throughout his life.

About His Life

Juan Laurentino Ortiz studied philosophy for a while. He also lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital, for a short time. However, he soon returned to his home province of Entre Ríos.

Even though he was part of some political groups, he mostly lived away from the busy cultural scene of Buenos Aires. He only traveled outside Argentina once, when he was invited to China.

His Unique Poetry

Juan Laurentino Ortiz wrote many poems. His work often connected his thoughts and feelings with the natural world around him. He called this connection a "splendid monotony," meaning a beautiful and peaceful sameness.

People often pictured him as a tall, thin figure quietly watching the river and its surroundings. This image became a famous part of his story. In literary groups in Buenos Aires, he was known as 'Juanele'.

He wrote his poems with long lines and used lowercase letters. He was very careful with every detail of his handwritten poems. Because of this, publishers usually kept these special features when they printed his books.

What Influenced His Work

His poetry was influenced by Symbolism, a style from French and Oriental poetry. His poems are known for being delicate and thoughtful.

He often wrote about rivers, trees, floods, and the changing seasons. But he also included the history and social issues of his home province.

Themes in His Poems

Juan Laurentino Ortiz's poems showed a special care for people's struggles. He wrote about the "drama of poverty" and especially the suffering of innocent children.

One of his well-known poems is "The Gualeguay." This poem tells the story of both the landscape and the historical and economic events that happened along the banks of one of the province's rivers.
