About Juan Mari Arzak's Life
Juan Mari Arzak was born in San Sebastián, Spain. He was the only child of Juan Ramon Arzak and Francisca Arratibel. He spent a lot of his childhood at his grandparents' restaurant.
Later, his parents took over the restaurant. After his father passed away in 1951, his mother continued to run it. Juan Mari Arzak then took charge of the family business. He has two daughters, Marta and Elena, with his partner Maite Espina.
Juan Mari Arzak's Cooking Career
Arzak says he was interested in cooking from a very young age. He helped out in his family's restaurant when he was a child. However, his true passion for cooking grew when he attended a hotel management school in Madrid.
After serving in the military, Arzak came back to his family's restaurant. He began training to become a chef, focusing on roasting meats. Since he took over the restaurant, it has become very famous. In 1989, his restaurant earned three Michelin stars, which are a very high honor in the cooking world.
In 2008, Arzak received the "Universal Basque" award. This award recognized him for making Basque cooking modern and innovative. He trained his daughter, Elena Arzak, to take over the restaurant. Elena has also won major awards, like "Veuve Clicquot World's Best Female Chef."
