About Juan Martínez Abades

Early Life and Education

Juan Martínez Abades was born in Gijón, Spain. His father was a businessman. Juan went to a special school called Real Instituto Jovellanos. This school taught about mining and sea-related activities. It was founded by Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.

Juan first showed his artistic talent at this school. He copied paintings from Jovellanos' art collection. Later, he moved to Madrid to study art. From 1880 to 1887, he attended the "Escuela Especial de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado." This was part of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. His teachers included the sculptor José Gragera [es] and the painter Ignacio Suárez Llanos.

Art Exhibitions and Awards

After finishing his studies, Juan took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed a historical painting about the death of Messalina. Because of this painting, he received money to travel. This allowed him to visit Italy and study at the Accademia di San Luca.

Juan won second place at the National Exhibition in 1890 and 1892. He then achieved first place in 1901. He continued to show his art at every National Exhibition until 1917.

Music and Other Works

Juan Martínez Abades was also a talented composer. He sometimes performed his own songs. Famous singers like Raquel Meller and Sara Montiel have recorded his songs, called cuplés. Some of his songs are even in movie soundtracks, like The Violet Seller (1958). One of his popular songs, "Los Amores de Ana," has been recorded many times. Recently, Ana Belén recorded it again.

From 1894 until he passed away, Juan often drew pictures for the magazine Blanco y Negro. His art was also shown in other countries. He exhibited his paintings in Chicago, USA, in 1893. He also had an exhibition in Havana, Cuba, in 1914.

Later Career and Legacy

In 1891, Juan married a woman from the Canary Islands. This led him to work on decorating the City Hall in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. His paintings of the sea became very diverse. They showed everyday scenes, new and old ships, shorebirds, and interesting rock formations.

After 1900, sea paintings became less popular. So, Juan focused more on his songwriting. However, from 1912 to 1914, he designed calendars for the Spanish Navy. Juan Martínez Abades died in Madrid when he was 57 years old. In 1987, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias held a large exhibition of his works. This exhibition traveled to different places.
