Juan Valverde de Amusco facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Juan Valverde de Amusco (born around 1525) was a Spanish doctor and anatomist. He is famous for his detailed books about the human body. He studied medicine in important cities like Padua and Rome, learning from well-known teachers of his time.

Early Life and Studies

Juan Valverde was born in what is now Spain around the year 1525. He was very interested in how the human body works. To learn more, he traveled to Italy, which was a major center for medical studies back then. He studied in cities like Padua and Rome, where he learned from famous anatomists such as Realdo Columbo and Bartolomeo Eustachi.

His Most Famous Book

Valverde's most important work was a book called Historia de la composicion del cuerpo humano. It was first published in Rome in 1556. This book was special because it had 42 detailed pictures of the human body. These pictures were made from copper plates.

Pictures in the Book

Most of the pictures in Valverde's book were very similar to those found in another famous anatomy book by Andreas Vesalius, called De humani corporis fabrica. Vesalius was not happy about this, saying that Valverde had copied his work. However, Valverde did make some changes and corrections to Vesalius's pictures, especially for parts like the muscles of the eyes, nose, and voice box.

One of the most striking original pictures in Valverde's book shows a muscle figure holding its own skin in one hand and a knife in the other. This image reminds many people of Saint Bartholomew in Michelangelo's famous painting, The Last Judgment, which is in the Sistine Chapel.

The Artists Behind the Images

The original drawings for Valverde's book were likely made by Gaspar Becerra (1520–1570). He was an artist who lived at the same time as Michelangelo. The detailed copperplate engravings, which turned the drawings into prints, are thought to have been done by Nicolas Beatrizet (around 1507–1570). You can even see his initials, "NB", on some of the plates.
