Juan de Barroeta was born in the city of Bilbao, Spain. His father was also a painter, creating decorations. He taught young Juan his first art lessons.
Early Art Training
In 1850, when he was about 15, Juan moved to Madrid. He joined a famous art school called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. There, he learned from a very important teacher named Federico de Madrazo. Madrazo greatly influenced Juan's painting style.
While studying, Juan also spent time with writers and poets. He even helped them start a magazine called El Precursor. In 1856, he took part in a big art show, the first National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He won third place for his painting of "The Raising of Lazarus."
Becoming a Portrait Artist
Juan tried twice to win a special scholarship. This scholarship would have let him study art in Rome, Italy. He tried in 1855 and again in 1859, but he didn't get it.
After his second try, he went back to Bilbao. There, he quickly became a very popular portrait artist. Many important people from the Basque region asked him to paint their pictures.
Other Art Projects
In 1865, Juan painted "imaginary portraits" for a history book. These were pictures of old kings from a long time ago, like Leovigildo and Chindasvinto. They were kings of the Visigoths, an ancient group of people.
He also drew pictures for several magazines. One of them was La Ilustración Española y Americana. Juan also designed posters and stage decorations for operas. These included famous shows like Faust and Roberto Devereux.

Juan de Barroeta was interested in politics. He supported liberal ideas, which often meant wanting more freedom for people. He even fought to protect his hometown during the Siege of Bilbao. This was a battle during the Third Carlist War, a conflict in Spain. He also painted many scenes from this war.
Even though he was involved in politics, he still painted a portrait of King Alfonso XII. He did this for a local government group in 1875. Juan de Barroeta passed away in Bilbao when he was 70 years old.
