Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (born July 24, 1841, died September 15, 1920) was a famous Spanish painter. He came from the Madrazo family, who were all artists. Raimundo mostly painted in a realistic style. This means his art looked very much like real life. Later, his paintings also showed influences from the Rococo style and Japanese art. He was best known for his "genre paintings," which show scenes from everyday life, and his portraits of people. His grandfather, José de Madrazo, his father, Federico de Madrazo, and his brother, Ricardo de Madrazo, were all painters too.

Raimundo de Madrazo: A Life in Art
Raimundo de Madrazo was born in Rome, Italy. He came from a very artistic family. His family was so important in art that they were called one of the most important painting families in Spain. They really shaped 19th-century Spanish painting.
His Artistic Family
Raimundo's grandfather was José de Madrazo. He was a painter and used to be the director of the famous Museo del Prado art museum. Raimundo's father, Federico de Madrazo, was also a painter.
His uncles were also artists. Luis de Madrazo was a painter, Pedro de Madrazo was an art critic, and Juan de Madrazo was an architect. His brother, Ricardo de Madrazo, was a painter too. Even his mother's father, Tadeusz Kuntze, was a Polish painter!
Learning to Paint
Raimundo's first art lessons came from his father and grandfather. After that, he went to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. This is a famous art school in Madrid, Spain. There, he studied with well-known teachers like Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes.
He then moved to Madrid. In 1860, he traveled to Paris, France, to continue his art education. In Paris, he learned from Léon Cogniet. He was also influenced by his friend, Alfred Stevens, another painter.
Exhibitions and Clients
Raimundo had his first art show in the same year he visited Paris, 1860. He often traveled to New York to sell his paintings. Some of his important clients there included the wealthy Vanderbilt family and a businessman named Alexander Turney Stewart. He did not have many art shows in Spain.
In 1882, Raimundo and some other artists started something new. With Alfred Stevens, Giuseppe de Nittis, and Georges Petit, they created an "International Painting Exhibition." Their goal was to help foreign artists living in Paris show their work.
Raimundo often showed his paintings at the Paris Salon. This was a very important art show in Paris. He won a big award at the Exposition Universelle (1889), which was a huge world's fair. He was also a regular guest at the art gatherings of Madeleine Lemaire.
A woman named Aline Masson was often the model for the female figures in his genre paintings. She was the daughter of the doorman at a fancy house in Paris.
Life in Different Countries
After 1862, Raimundo lived in Paris for most of his life. In the late 1860s, he spent some time in Rome with his brother. They worked in the art studios of Mariano Fortuny. Fortuny had married Raimundo's sister, Cecilia.
During the Franco-Prussian War, Raimundo lived in Granada, Spain. His wife passed away in 1874 while giving birth. This was the same year his brother-in-law, Fortuny, also died.
In 1894, Raimundo gave a special gift to the Museo del Prado. He donated a collection of artworks by the famous artist Francisco de Goya. Raimundo had bought these artworks in 1869. In 1914, he moved to Versailles, France, where he passed away six years later. His son, Federico de Madrazo y Ochoa, also became a well-known painter.
