Carlos Luis de Ribera y Fieve (born in Rome in 1815, died in Madrid in 1891) was an important Spanish painter. He was the son of another famous painter, Juan Antonio Ribera. Carlos Luis is known for his historical and religious paintings.

Becoming an Artist: Early Life and Education

Carlos Luis de Ribera showed artistic talent from a young age. His godparents were even the former King Charles IV and Maria Luisa of Parma. He studied art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Spain.

When he was just fifteen years old in 1830, he won first prize in a competition. This was for his portrait painting called Vasco Núñez de Balboa. This award also gave him money to study art in other countries. He traveled to Rome and Paris to continue his education. In Paris, he learned from a famous French painter named Paul Delaroche.

Carlos Luis spent nine years studying in Paris. Paul Delaroche encouraged him to focus on painting historical scenes. This time helped shape him into the artist he became. He also joined groups of Romantic thinkers in Madrid. He helped start a magazine called El artista and contributed many drawings to it.

Working for the Royal Academy

Carlos Luis de Ribera became a respected artist in Spain. In 1845, he was chosen to be a lecturer at the Royal Academy. He received important awards for his work. These included the Cross of the Order of Charles III in 1860. He also received the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 1870.

For many years, starting in 1878, Ribera was a judge at the Royal Academy. He also worked as a court painter for Queen Isabella II. Later, he became the Minister of Public Instruction. He was also the Director of the Academy of San Fernando.

Famous Artworks and Decorations

Carlos Luis de Ribera painted many different kinds of pictures. He was known for his historical paintings, like Don Rodrigo Calderon Gallows Road. Another famous historical work is The Taking of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs.

He also painted religious scenes, such as The Conversion of St. Paul and The Assumption of the Virgin. Besides paintings, he decorated important buildings. He worked on the inside of the Palace of the Parliament in 1850. He also decorated the church of San Francisco el Grande Basilica.

Art Exhibitions

Carlos Luis de Ribera often showed his artworks in Paris. He exhibited there regularly between 1839 and 1855. He also displayed his paintings in Spain. His works were shown at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He also exhibited at the Artistic and Literary Liceo.

Designs and Illustrations

Besides painting, Carlos Luis de Ribera also worked as a designer and illustrator. He created drawings for several magazines of his time. These included The Artist and Journal of Home Culture and the Spanish Museum of Antiquities.
