Juan de Cáceres y Ulloa (born in 1618, died in 1682) was an important Spanish nobleman and musician. He worked as the main organ player at the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral. He was one of the very first musicians known from the Río de la Plata region, along with Juan Vizcaíno de Agüero.
Juan de Cáceres y Ulloa's Life
Juan de Cáceres y Ulloa was born in Buenos Aires in 1618. His parents were Alonso de Cáceres and María Coutinho. His family was a noble Creole family. This means they were of Spanish and Portuguese background, but born in the Americas.
His grandfather was Felipe de Cáceres. Felipe was an important leader in Paraguay for a few years. Juan's mother, María, came from a noble family too. Her ancestors included famous people like Vasco Fernandes Coutinho and Pedro Álvarez Holguín de Ulloa.
Becoming an Organist
Juan de Cáceres y Ulloa learned music from Juan Vizcaíno de Agüero. Agüero was also an organist at the Cathedral of Buenos Aires.
Later, Juan de Cáceres y Ulloa took over Agüero's job. He became the new organist for the Cathedral. He was paid 100 pesos each year for his work. He was in charge of playing the organ and leading the plainchant. Plainchant is a type of old church music sung without instruments. Juan de Cáceres y Ulloa held this important musical role for almost 30 years.
