Pedro Álvarez Holguín (born 1490, died 1542) was a Spanish nobleman and a brave soldier. He was a 'conquistador,' which means he was part of the Spanish efforts to explore and take control of new lands. He played a big role in the Spanish conquest of Peru.
A Spanish Conquistador's Life
Pedro Álvarez Holguín was born in 1490 in a city called Cáceres, in Spain. His parents were Pedro Álvarez Golfín and Constanza de Aldana. They came from important families of 'hidalgos,' which were a type of Spanish nobility.
Around 1530, Pedro Álvarez Holguín traveled to the Americas, specifically to a place the Spanish called New Spain. He became very involved in the Spanish conquest of Peru. He helped Francisco Pizarro, a famous Spanish leader, when a big rebellion started in Cuzco. This rebellion was led by a warrior named Manco-Cápac.
Holguín also supported Pizarro in a conflict against another Spanish group led by Diego de Almagro. He fought in an important battle called the Battle of Las Salinas.
After Francisco Pizarro was killed, Pedro Álvarez Holguín continued to support the Spanish government. He joined the new Spanish governor, Cristóbal Vaca de Castro, against another rebellion. This new uprising was led by Diego de Almagro II, also known as “El Mozo.” Sadly, on September 16, 1542, Pedro Álvarez Holguín was killed during the Battle of Chupas. He was 52 years old when he died.
