The Life of Túpac Huallpa
Túpac Huallpa was born in 1510 in the city of Cusco, which was the capital of the Inca Empire. He was a younger brother to two other important Inca leaders, Atahualpa and Huáscar.
Becoming a Ruler
After the Spanish executed his brother Atahualpa on July 26, 1533, the Spanish leaders needed someone to rule the Inca people. They chose Túpac Huallpa to be the new Sapa Inca, or emperor. The Spanish wanted to make it seem like the Inca people were still being ruled by one of their own.
They made sure Túpac Huallpa was crowned with a big ceremony. This was done to convince everyone that he was the rightful ruler. However, he was really just following the orders of the Spanish.
His Short Reign
Túpac Huallpa's time as Sapa Inca was very short. He died in October 1533, only a few months after becoming ruler. He passed away in a place called Jauja. After his death, another one of his brothers, Manco Inca Yupanqui, became the next Sapa Inca chosen by the Spanish.
