In 1895, a big event called the Liberal Revolution began in Ecuador. This was a time of major political change. Juan de Dios Martínez Mera joined the army that was fighting for this revolution.

He became part of the special group that protected General Eloy Alfaro. General Alfaro was a very important leader in the revolution. Juan de Dios Martínez Mera was with him in many battles. He also entered Quito, the capital of Ecuador, with the winning side.
