Juan de Espinal (born 1714, died 1783) was a skilled Spanish painter. He was born in Seville, a city in Spain. Espinal was known for painting historical scenes.

Who Was Juan de Espinal?

Juan de Espinal came from a family of artists. His father, Gregorio Espinal, was also a painter and taught Juan. Later, Juan studied with another famous painter named Domingo Martinez. Juan even married Domingo Martinez's daughter!

A Talented Artist

Juan de Espinal was chosen to be the director of a special School of Design in Seville. This school was started by art lovers like Cean Bermúdez. Cean Bermúdez believed that Juan de Espinal had more natural talent than any other artist of his time. He thought Espinal could have been the best painter in Seville since the famous artist Murillo.

Important Works

Juan de Espinal created many important paintings. Some of his main works show scenes from the life of Saint Jerome. These paintings were made for the monastery of San Geronimo de Buenavista. Today, you can see them in the Seville Museum. He also painted beautiful pictures on the walls of the collegiate church of San Salvador. These are called frescoes.

Later Life and Legacy

Late in his life, Juan de Espinal visited Madrid, another big city in Spain. This trip made him realize that he could have achieved even more in his art. He returned to Seville feeling a bit sad. Juan de Espinal passed away in Seville in 1783. His work remains an important part of Spanish art history.
