Juan del Grijalva is a small village in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is home to about 416 people. The village is part of the Ostuacán Municipality. You can find it in the northern part of Chiapas. It sits right on the banks of the Grijalva River. The village is located between two important dams: the Peñitas Dam and the Malpaso Dam.
The 2007 Landslide Event
On November 5, 2007, something big happened in Juan del Grijalva. A large landslide occurred from a nearby hill. This landslide fell directly into the Grijalva River.
How the Landslide Affected the Village
When the landslide hit the river, it created a huge wave. This wave was about 50 meters (or 164 feet) high! The powerful wave crashed into the village. Sadly, it destroyed all the buildings in Juan del Grijalva.
