Juana de Aizpuru, born Juana Domínguez on August 22, 1933, is a famous Spanish art gallerist. She was a pioneer in collecting and showing modern art in Spain. A gallerist is someone who owns or manages an art gallery. They help artists show and sell their work.

Early Life and First Gallery

Juana de Aizpuru was born in Valladolid, Spain. She later moved to Madrid as a child. In 1955, she married Juan Aizpuru. They moved to Seville, where she opened her first art gallery in 1970. This gallery was called the Juana de Aizpuru gallery. From 1977 to 1983, she helped young artists from Andalusia. She even created a special scholarship for them.

Creating ARCO Art Fair

In 1979, Juana had a big idea. She suggested creating a major art fair in Madrid. This idea led to the International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid, known as ARCO. The first ARCO fair happened in 1982. Juana was its director until 1986. After she left, Rosina Gómez Baeza took over.

Expanding Her Influence

In 1983, Juana opened another gallery, this time in Madrid. Her influence in the art world grew. In 1991, she became the president of the Spanish Association of Contemporary Art Galleries. She also joined the board of directors for the Spanish Federation of Art Galleries.

Awards and Recognition

Juana de Aizpuru has received many important awards. In 1997, she was given the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts. This is a high honor for people who have done great things in art. France also recognized her by making her a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Founding BIACS

In 2003, Juana created another important art event. She started the International Contemporary Art Biennial of Seville (BIACS). A biennial is an event that happens every two years. She was the first director of BIACS. In 2011, she was named a "favorite daughter" of Andalusia. This award recognized her groundbreaking work. It celebrated how she brought new ideas and freedom to the art scene in Spain.

Working with Artists

Juana de Aizpuru is a key figure in Spanish contemporary art. She works with many talented artists from Spain and other countries. Some of these artists have won major awards. They include Cristina García Rodero, Cristina de Middel, Elena Asins, and Alberto García-Alix. She also works with artists like Cristina Lucas, Priscilla Monge, Montserrat Soto, Tania Bruguera, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Alicia Framis, Jordi Colomer, Pierre Gonnord, Joseph Kosuth, Andres Serrano, Philipp Fröhlich, and Georg Dokoupil. Her artists show their work at top art fairs around the world. These include Frieze London, Frieze New York, and Art Basel in Switzerland and Miami.
