Juana Domínguez, known as Juana de Aizpuru, was born on August 22, 1933. She is a famous Spanish art gallerist and collector. She is known for being a pioneer in bringing modern art to Spain.

Her Life and Work

Juana de Aizpuru was born in Valladolid, Spain. She moved to Madrid when she was a child. In 1955, she married Juan Aizpuru. They moved to Seville.

Opening Art Galleries

In 1970, Juana opened her first art gallery in Seville. An art gallery is a place where artists show and sell their artwork. From 1977 to 1983, she helped young artists from Andalusia. She even created a special scholarship called the "Juana de Aizpuru Scholarship" to support them.

In 1983, she opened another art gallery in Madrid.

Creating ARCO

In 1979, Juana had a great idea. She suggested creating a big art fair in Madrid. This idea became the International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid, known as ARCO. The first ARCO fair was held in 1982. Juana was the director of ARCO until 1986. ARCO is now one of the most important art fairs in the world.

Leading Art Organizations

In 1991, Juana was chosen to be the president of the Spanish Association of Contemporary Art Galleries. She also became a member of the board for the Spanish Federation of Art Galleries. This shows how important she was in the art world.

Awards and Honors

Juana de Aizpuru has received many awards for her work.

  • In 1997, she was given the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts. This is a very high honor in Spain for people who have done great things in art.
  • France also honored her as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Founding BIACS

In 2003, Juana created another important art event. This was the International Contemporary Art Biennial of Seville, called BIACS. A biennial is an art exhibition that happens every two years. She was the first director of BIACS.

In 2011, she was named a "Favorite Daughter of Andalusia." This award recognized her amazing work. People said she "broke countless molds" and brought "freedom and hope" to the art scene in Spain.
