The Jubilee Building is an important and historic part of the Western Australian Museum in Perth, Western Australia. This beautiful building was designed in a special style called Victorian Byzantine. It was created by an architect named George Temple-Poole and opened in 1899.

A Building with a Royal Start

The Jubilee Building was first planned to celebrate a big event. This was Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. A jubilee is a special anniversary, and this one marked 50 years of her being Queen.

Original Plans and Location

The first idea was to build a place that held a library, a museum, and an art gallery all together. It was going to be on St Georges Terrace in Perth. But over time, the plans changed. By 1894, the idea for the St Georges Terrace spot was dropped.

Finding a New Home

After a few years, a new location was chosen. This spot was near the corner of James Street and Beaufort Street. It was a good choice because it was close to other important buildings. One of these was the old Perth Gaol, which was already being used for museum displays and storage. Even while it was being built in 1897, people still called it the "Victoria Public Library."

Construction and Early Days

Building the Jubilee Building started in 1897. Even before it was fully finished, the museum began to move in. They started using the basement area in 1899. This shows how eager everyone was to get the museum up and running!

Nearby Buildings

Right next to the Jubilee Building, on its west side, is another important building called Hackett Hall. This hall used to be where the Public Library was located. These buildings together formed a hub for learning and culture in Perth.

Modern Updates

The Jubilee Building has been given a fresh new look! It's part of a big project to update the Western Australian Museum. This whole area is now known as the Perth Cultural Centre.

Restoring its Grandeur

As part of the updates, the entire Jubilee Building has been carefully restored. Its grand entrance and outdoor terrace have been reopened. This means visitors can now enjoy its beautiful design and history even more. It helps connect the past with the present for everyone who visits the museum.
