Jubilee Rock Blisland in Cornwall

Jubilee Rock is a very old and special rock found in Cornwall, England. It's located on Pendrift Downs, near a village called Blisland. This large rock is important because it has carvings that celebrate big moments in history, especially royal anniversaries. It is also recognized as a Grade II listed site, meaning it's a building or structure of special historical interest.

Jubilee Rock: A Historic Stone

Jubilee Rock is considered the oldest stone on Bodmin Moor, a famous area in Cornwall. It's quite big, standing about 10 feet (3 meters) tall and stretching 25 feet (7.6 meters) across. The rock sits at 213 meters (about 700 feet) above sea level.

A Look at the Carvings

This unique rock features special carvings on its sides. On the north side, you can see the coat of arms for the Falmouth and Morshead families. A coat of arms is like a special symbol or design that represents a family or a group. On the south side, there is another coat of arms, this one belonging to the Molesworth family.

Celebrating Royal Anniversaries

Jubilee Rock was first decorated in 1810 by a person named Lieut. John Rogers. He did this to celebrate a very important event: the Golden Jubilee of George III. A "Golden Jubilee" marks the fiftieth anniversary of a king or queen being on the throne. In this case, it was for King George III.

The rock has been updated over the years to celebrate other royal jubilees too:

  • It was restored in 1859 and again in 1887.
  • In 1887, a new carving was added to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
  • Much later, in 2002, another inscription was added for the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II.

These carvings and updates show how Jubilee Rock has been a part of celebrating important moments in British history for over 200 years!
