Robert Edward "Judy" Gans (born July 16, 1886 – died February 13, 1949) was a talented baseball player. He was an outfielder, pitcher, and manager. Judy Gans played for many years in the Negro Leagues. These leagues were for African American players. They existed before and during the early years of the first Negro National League.

Judy Gans played for some of the most famous teams. He spent most of his career with the Chicago American Giants and the Lincoln Giants. These teams were very important in the history of baseball.

A Special Baseball Series

Judy Gans was part of a very important event in baseball history. He played in what many consider the first "postseason" series for Negro League teams. This was a big championship series. The Chicago American Giants were the best team from the West. They played against the Lincoln Giants, the best team from the East.

The series was very exciting and lasted almost a month. In the final game, Game 14, Gans was the starting pitcher for the New York Lincoln Giants. He pitched an amazing game. He only allowed one run and nine hits. His team, the Lincoln Giants, won the game 4-1. This victory gave them their eighth win of the series. After this, a similar postseason series would not happen again for eight years.

Early Life and Service

Judy Gans was born in Washington, Pennsylvania. He even attended Washington and Jefferson College in his hometown.

During World War I, Gans served his country. He was part of the American Expeditionary Forces. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on May 19, 1919.

Later Years

In his later life, Judy Gans lived and worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He passed away there in 1949 at the age of 62. He was married to Elvera C. (Gardner) Gans, whom he married in 1937. Judy Gans is buried at the Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, New Jersey.
