Judith (Judy) Green was born in 1943. She is an American logician and a historian of mathematics. This means she studies how people use logic in math and also looks at the history of math. She is especially interested in the history of women in mathematics.

Judy Green helped start the Association for Women in Mathematics. This group supports women who work in math. She has also been a vice president for this group. She was also a vice president for the American Association of University Professors. This group works to protect the rights of college professors.

Education and Career

Judy Green went to Cornell University for her first degree. She then earned a master's degree from Yale University. After that, she got her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a subject.

Her Ph.D. project was called Consistency Properties for Uncountable Finite-Quantifier Languages. She finished it in 1972. Her professor, Carol Karp, helped her with this important work.

In 1975, Judy Green was chosen to be a special member of the American Mathematical Society. She served in this role for three years. She taught at Rutgers University for many years. In 1989, she moved to teach at Marymount University. She retired from teaching in 2007. After retiring, she started volunteering at the National Museum of American History.

Important Book

Judy Green wrote a very important book with Jeanne LaDuke. The book is called Pioneering Women in American Mathematics: The Pre-1940 PhD’s. It was published in 2009.

This book tells the stories of the first women in the United States. These women earned doctorates, or Ph.D.s, in mathematics before 1940. It shows how important these women were in math history.

Awards and Recognition

In 2019, Judy Green was named a fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics. This is a special honor given to people who have done great things for women in math.
