Jules Anton Deelder (born November 24, 1944 – died December 19, 2019) was a famous Dutch poet, writer, and spoken word artist. He was known for his unique way of performing his poems. Many of his works were about life in the city of Rotterdam and his love for jazz music.

A Passion for Words and Music

Jules Deelder really loved the Dutch language. He worried that smaller languages like Dutch might become less important. He was very popular in the Netherlands. He often appeared on TV and performed live.

He worked with musicians like Herman Brood and Benjamin Herman. They would record and perform his poetry together. Because of his big role in Rotterdam's culture, people called him the "night mayor of Rotterdam."

Discovering Jazz

In 1954, when Jules was just 9 years old, he discovered jazz music. He heard Chet Baker play and it gave him goose bumps. From that moment on, jazz became very important to him. He even called it his "religion."

Jules Deelder hosted his own jazz radio show called Deelder Draait. It was on Arrow Jazz FM. He also wrote stories for comic books. He wrote for the series Amber en Akka and Professor Hilarius. A comic book character named Juul Deeldert was even inspired by him!

Recordings and Performances

Jules Deelder released many recordings during his career. These included live shows, music, and poetry. He often combined his spoken word performances with jazz music.

  • Deelder Speaks (1986) was a recording of one of his theater shows.
  • Deelder Drumt Jazz (1993) featured music, stories, and poetry.
  • He had a hit song called Oh Kut with Herman Brood in 1997.
  • He also released several albums called Deelder Draait, Deelder Draait Door, Deelder Blijft Draaien, and Deelder Rhythm. These were collections of jazz music from his own favorite songs.
  • De Deeldeliers (2013) was an album of music and poetry with Bas van Lier and other artists.
