About Jules Mutebutsi

Early Life and Background

Jules Mutebutsi was from the Banyamulenge community. This community lives in the South Kivu area of the Congo.

His Role in Bukavu

On May 26, 2004, Mutebutsi and another soldier named Laurent Nkunda took control of the city of Bukavu. Both were soldiers in the military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They said they wanted to protect the Banyamulenge people in the Congo.

During their time in the city, an organization called Amnesty International asked them to make sure their soldiers treated everyone fairly. This was because some people had been treated badly. On June 9, Mutebutsi and Nkunda left the city. They were defeated by government troops. Mutebutsi went to Rwanda with about 300 soldiers. At that time, he was a Colonel. Mutebutsi said he went to Rwanda because Congolese and United Nations troops were trying to harm him.

Life in Exile

After leaving the Congo, Jules Mutebutsi stayed in Rwanda. He was kept under house arrest there. This means he had to stay in a specific place and could not leave freely.

Later Life and Passing

Jules Mutebutsi died in a hospital in Kigali, Rwanda. He was 54 years old and passed away from an illness. Before he died, Mutebutsi had shared worries about his safety. This was because he had not supported a group called the March 23 Movement.
