South Kivu (also called Sud-Kivu in French) is a province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is one of 26 provinces in the country. Its capital city is Bukavu.

About South Kivu
South Kivu is a region in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is known for its beautiful landscapes. The province has a large population. In 2015, about 5.7 million people lived there.
How South Kivu Was Formed
South Kivu became a province in 1989. Before that, it was part of a larger area called Kivu Province. Kivu Province was split into three new provinces. These were South Kivu, North Kivu, and Maniema.
What Happened in the 2015 Earthquake?
On August 7, 2015, an earthquake hit South Kivu. It was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake. The ground shook about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of a town called Kabare. The earthquake happened 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) deep underground. Sadly, one person died because of the earthquake.
Parts of South Kivu
The province of South Kivu is divided into eight smaller areas. These areas are called territories. Each territory has its own capital town.
- Fizi is a large territory. Its capital town is also called Fizi.
- Idjwi is special because it is an island in Lake Kivu.
- Kabare is another territory in the province.
- Kalehe is located in South Kivu.
- Mwenga is a territory with a significant area.
- Shabunda is the largest territory in South Kivu.
- Uvira has a capital town also named Uvira.
- Walungu is one of the smaller territories.
