North Kivu is a large area, called a province, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its main city and capital is Goma. This province is located right next to Lake Kivu.
North Kivu was created in 1989. Before that, it was part of a larger area called Kivu Province. Kivu Province was split into three new provinces: North Kivu, South Kivu, and Maniema.

One of the most important animals living in Virunga National Park is the mountain gorilla. These gorillas are very rare and are an endangered species. The park helps to keep them safe.
