Julia Goddard facts for kids
Julia Bachope Goddard (born July 11, 1825 – died September 30, 1896) was a British writer. She wrote more than 25 books especially for children. She was also an artist and a journalist. Julia Goddard was a strong supporter of animal welfare, meaning she worked to help animals be treated kindly.
Her Early Life
Julia Goddard was born in Birmingham, England, on July 11, 1825. She was the oldest of ten children. Her parents were Samuel Aspinwall Goddard and Jemima Goddard.
Her father, Samuel, was born in Brookline, in the United States. He moved to Birmingham around 1820. There, he made guns and sold iron. He even showed his work at a famous event called The Great Exhibition in 1851.
Samuel Goddard was very interested in politics. He wrote articles about free trade and money. He also worked hard to convince people in Britain to support the Union during the American Civil War. He was the United States' consul in Birmingham before becoming a British citizen. Julia's family was very political, but neither she nor her father ever ran for public office.
Her Writing Career
In 1863, Julia Goddard published her first children's book, Karl and the Six Little Dwarfs. She went on to publish at least 25 more books during her life.
Many of her books focused on how important it is to be kind to animals. This showed her deep care for animals. She worked to help animals get better treatment. People at the time said she was one of the hardest workers in the animal welfare movement.
Her Personal Life
Julia Goddard never got married.
Later Years and Passing
From 1894 onwards, Julia Goddard had very poor health. She got a severe case of influenza, which made her very sick. Her eyesight also started to fail. Because of these health problems, she had to stop writing.
She lived with her sister, Fanny Delavan Goddard. They shared a cottage in Little Aston, near Sutton Coldfield, England. Julia Goddard passed away at her home on September 30, 1896. She died from a brain bleed.
