Musical Journey
Barwick's unique sound was inspired by singing in a church choir when she was growing up in Louisiana. Instead of writing songs with lyrics, she builds them around the sound of her voice.
Early Music and EPs
In 2006, Barwick released her first collection of songs, an EP called Sanguine. The songs on this EP have no words. Instead, she layered recordings of her voice and used vocal sounds for percussion.
Later, on her EP Florine, she used a loop station and pedals. This equipment helped her create simple, repeating sounds with layers of her voice and synthesizer music.
In 2010, the famous band Radiohead asked her to create a new version of their song "Reckoner". The next year, she worked with musician Ikue Mori on an album of improvised music called FRKWYS Vol. 6.
Studio Albums
Barwick recorded her first full-length album, The Magic Place, on a rehearsal stage that was soundproof and had a piano. The album is named after a special tree on her family's farm. The tree was so big that she could crawl inside it, and she imagined it had rooms made of its trunk and branches.
In 2012, she teamed up with Helado Negro to form a duo called Ombre. Together, they recorded the album Believe You Me.
Her second album, Nepenthe, was inspired by a sad time in her life after a relative passed away. The name "Nepenthe" comes from an imaginary potion in ancient Greek stories and the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. This potion was said to help people forget their sadness. The album features a string group called Amiina and a choir of teenage girls.
In 2016, a song called "Nebula" from her third album, Will, was first played on NPR. The music video for the song was filmed at the famous Philip Johnson Glass House, a historic building made almost entirely of glass.
She released an EP called Circumstance Synthesis in December 2019. In July 2020, her fourth album, Healing Is a Miracle, came out. On April 23, 2025, she released the single 'feels' with David Franklin Courtright.
