Julianna Barwick's Musical Journey
Julianna Barwick grew up in Louisiana. She has shared that singing in her church choir greatly influenced her music. She uses special machines to create electronic loops. These loops are made by recording her voice and then playing it back over and over, adding more layers.
Early Music and First Albums
Julianna released her first collection of songs, called Sanguine, in 2006. These songs did not have words. Instead, they featured many layers of her voice, vocal sounds, and improvised parts. On her next collection, Florine, she used a loop station and pedals. This helped her create simple, repeated sounds with layers of vocals and synthesizers.
In 2010, Julianna was asked to remix a song called "Reckoner" by the band Radiohead. The next year, she released an album of music created on the spot, called FRKWYS Vol. 6, with Ikue Mori.
Her first full-length album, The Magic Place, was recorded in a special way. She used a soundproof rehearsal stage that also had a piano. The album's title, The Magic Place, refers to a big tree on her family's farm. She could crawl inside this tree, and it felt like it had different rooms made by its trunk and branches.
In 2012, Julianna formed a music group called Ombre with Helado Negro. They recorded an album together called Believe You Me.
Later Works and Collaborations
Julianna's second album, Nepenthe, was released in 2013. This album featured a string group called Amiina. It also included a choir of teenage girls, adding unique voices to her music.
In 2016, a song called "Nebula" from her third album, Will, was first played on NPR. A music video for "Nebula" was filmed at the famous Philip Johnson Glass House.
More recently, Julianna released a collection of songs called Circumstance Synthesis in December 2019. In July 2020, her fourth album, Healing Is a Miracle, came out.
