Julie Hayden (born around 1857 – died August 21, 1874), sometimes called Julia Hayden, was a brave seventeen-year-old Black school teacher from America. She was killed by members of a group called the White League just days after she started teaching at a school for Black children in Tennessee.

Julie Hayden's Early Life and Education

Julie Hayden grew up in a town called Spring Hill in Maury County, Tennessee. She was a bright student who wanted to help others learn. To become a teacher, she went to Central Tennessee College in Nashville. This college was special because it trained Black students to become teachers during a time when education was not always available to everyone.

The White League and Its Actions

The White League was a group that formed in the Southern United States after the American Civil War. This group wanted to stop Black people from having equal rights and opportunities, especially in politics and education. They often used violence and threats to try and control society. Julie Hayden's murder was part of their efforts to prevent Black children from getting an education and to scare Black communities.

A Teacher's Courage and Legacy

Julie Hayden was very courageous to become a teacher in Tennessee during this difficult time. She believed strongly in the power of education for Black children. Her death was a tragic event that showed the dangers faced by those who fought for equality and education after the Civil War. Even though her life was cut short, her story reminds us of the importance of fighting for justice and the right to learn for everyone.
