Julie Wilson Nimmo is a Scottish actress. She is famous for playing Miss Hoolie in the BBC children's show Balamory. She also played Mrs Sawdust in the CBeebies show Olga Da Polga. You might also know her as DC Megan Squire from the BBC comedy series Scot Squad.

Acting Career

Julie Wilson Nimmo has had a long and exciting career in acting. She has worked in TV shows, radio, and on stage.

Early TV Shows

Julie started her career in 1995 in a sketch show called Pulp Video. Her husband, Greg Hemphill, helped write this show. From 1999 to 2002, Julie was a regular star in another sketch show called Chewin' the Fat. She appeared in all four series of this popular show.

Stage and Other Roles

After a short break, Julie returned to acting on stage in Glasgow. She performed in a musical called Aladdin. She also had a small part in the Scottish comedy TV series Rab C. Nesbitt. Julie even played a historical figure, Elizabeth Macquarie, in a show called The Father of Australia.

Starring in Balamory

From 2002 to 2005, Julie became very well-known for her role as Miss Hoolie in the CBeebies children's show Balamory. Miss Hoolie was the friendly nursery teacher who helped everyone in the colourful town of Balamory.

Later TV and Radio Work

In 2014, Julie appeared on a children's special of Pointless Celebrities. She played the game with her Balamory co-star, Andrew Agnew.

In 2016, she starred in a horror comedy called West Skerra Light. This show was written and directed by her husband, Greg Hemphill. They worked together again on another horror comedy in 2018 called Long Night at Blackstone.

In 2017, Julie took on the role of DC Megan Squire in the BBC Scotland comedy show Scot Squad. She also appeared in an episode of Still Game in 2018, which also starred her husband.

During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Julie took part in a project called "Scenes For Survival". This project was created to help live theatre during a difficult time.

Recent Projects

In 2021, Julie performed as Olive the Reindeer at the Tron Theatre. In 2022, Balamory celebrated its 20th anniversary. Julie appeared on TV and radio shows, like This Morning, to talk about the show's return to BBC iPlayer.

In November 2022, Julie starred as Mrs Sawdust in a new CBeebies TV series called Olga da Polga. Her husband, Greg Hemphill, played Mr Sawdust in the show.

On New Year's Day 2023, Julie and her husband starred in a TV programme called Jules' and Greg's Wild Swim. It was all about wild swimming. They filmed a full series of this show in the summer of 2023, which aired in January 2024.

Julie returned as DC Megan Squire in Scot Squad in January 2023. In March 2023, Julie was part of a BBC Scotland documentary. It celebrated 100 years of broadcasting. She was joined by her husband and her Balamory co-star, Juliet Cadzow.

In January 2025, Julie and Greg Hemphill will present a show for BBC Radio Scotland called Jules and Greg's New Year. They will share stories and play their favourite music.

Personal Life

Julie Wilson Nimmo is married to actor Greg Hemphill. They have two sons together. Julie and Greg first met and worked together on the TV comedy Pulp Video in 1995. They also starred together in Chewin' the Fat.
