Julie Wilson Nimmo (born 26 May 1972) is a Scottish actress. She is well-known for playing Miss Hoolie in the popular BBC children's show Balamory. She also played Mrs Sawdust in the CBeebies series Olga Da Polga and DC Megan Squire in the BBC Scotland comedy Scot Squad.

Her Acting Journey
Starting Out in TV
Julie Wilson Nimmo began her acting career in 1995. She appeared in a sketch show called Pulp Video. Her husband, Greg Hemphill, helped write this show. From 1999 to 2002, Julie was a regular on another sketch show, Chewin' the Fat. She was in all four series of this show.
Famous Roles and Stage Work
After a short break, Julie returned to acting on stage in Glasgow. She played So-Shy in a musical called Aladdin. She also had a small part in the Scottish comedy TV series Rab C. Nesbitt. Julie played a historical figure, Elizabeth Macquarie, in a show called The Father of Australia.
From 2002 to 2005, Julie starred as Miss Hoolie in the CBeebies children's show Balamory. This role made her very popular with young viewers.
She also acted in radio shows. She played Lovely Sue in a Radio 4 comedy series. She also took part in a radio play about a court case.
Recent TV and Stage Appearances
In 2014, Julie was a guest on a children's special of Pointless Celebrities. She appeared with Andrew Agnew, who also starred in Balamory.
In 2016, Julie acted in a horror comedy called West Skerra Light. Her husband, Greg Hemphill, wrote and directed it. She worked with John Michie and Lorraine McIntosh on this project. They all worked together again in 2018 on another horror comedy, Long Night at Blackstone.
In 2017, Julie took on the role of DC Megan Squire in the BBC Scotland comedy show Scot Squad. She also appeared in an episode of Still Game in 2018, alongside her husband.
In 2020, Julie joined the "Scenes For Survival" project. This project was created because live theatres were closed during the coronavirus pandemic. Her husband wrote and directed it for the National Theatre of Scotland.
In 2021, she played Olive the Reindeer at the Tron Theatre.
In 2022, Balamory celebrated its 20th anniversary. Julie appeared on TV and radio, including This Morning with Andrew Agnew, to mark the occasion.
In October 2022, Julie co-hosted a breakfast radio show with Ewan Cameron across Scotland. From December 2022 to January 2023, she performed in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the Tron Theatre.
In November 2022, Julie starred as Mrs Sawdust in the new CBeebies TV series Olga da Polga. Her husband, Greg Hemphill, played Mr Sawdust.
On New Year's Day 2023, Julie and her husband starred in a TV show called Jules' and Greg's Wild Swim. It was about wild swimming and aired on the BBC Scotland Channel. The full series was filmed in the summer of 2023.
In January 2023, Julie returned as DC Megan Squire in the BBC Scotland comedy series Scot Squad. In February 2023, she co-hosted the "Ewen and Cat at Breakfast" radio show again.
In March 2023, Julie was part of a BBC Scotland documentary. It celebrated 100 years of broadcasting. She was joined by her husband and her Balamory co-star Juliet Cadzow. In August 2023, Julie and Greg finished filming the series version of Jules and Greg's Wild Swim. This series aired in January 2024 on BBC Scotland. In the last episode, Julie visited Tobermory, where Balamory was filmed.
In January 2025, Julie and her husband Greg Hemphill presented Jules and Greg's New Year for BBC Radio Scotland. They shared stories and played their favourite music.
Julie Wilson Nimmo is expected to return to her role as Miss Hoolie in Balamory in 2026.
Personal Life
Julie Wilson Nimmo is married to actor Greg Hemphill. They have two sons together. They first met and worked together on the TV comedy Pulp Video in 1995. They also appeared together in Chewin' the Fat from 1999 to 2002.
