Early Life and Education
Julien Courbet was born Frédéric René Courbet in Eysines, a town near Bordeaux, France. He went to the IUT Techniques de commercialisation at University Bordeaux IV. This is where he studied skills for business and marketing.
Starting in Radio
Julien Courbet began his career in radio in Bordeaux. He worked for several local radio stations like Radio Angora, NRJ, Fun Radio, and Wit FM.
From 1986 to 1991, he also worked as a presenter for France 3 Aquitaine, a regional TV channel. On Wit FM, he hosted a morning show called Que fait la police ? He also worked at Sud Radio, where he met Hervé Pouchol, who later helped him with a show called La guerre des voisins. From 1992 to 1994, he was on NRJ with a show called N'importe quoi.
Television Career
Julien Courbet became a big name in French television. He hosted and produced many popular shows.
Working at TF1
In 1993, Julien Courbet met Gérard Louvin, who helped him get a job at TF1, a major French TV channel. He started as a guest on the show Sacrée Soirée. Then, he began presenting his own programs.
His first big show was Sans aucun doute, which means "Without a Doubt." From 1994 to 2008, he worked on TF1. He hosted many shows, including Code de la route, and produced others like Le Grand Frère (The Big Brother). He became very famous for helping people who were victims of romance scams and other tricks. His shows, like Les Sept Péchés capitaux (The Seven Deadly Sins) and Sans aucun doute, were very popular. In 2004, he created a show called Stop arnaques (Stop Scams).
In 2005, he started his own production company called La Concepteria. Before that, he had sold his previous company, Quai Sud Télévisions, to TF1. This company owned the rights to shows like Sans aucun doute. In 2007, he launched a website to help consumers. It gave advice on legal rights and solutions to common problems.
Moving to France 2
In September 2008, Julien Courbet moved to France 2, another big French TV channel. He started presenting a show called Service Maximum. He left TF1 because they did not want to broadcast a daily show before the evening news. France 2 agreed to his idea. Even after moving, he continued to produce Le Grand Frère for TF1. In 2008, he also produced a show called Je suis timide mais j'me soigne (I'm Shy But I'm Curing Myself) for the channel Direct 8.
His move to France 2 was a big topic of discussion. His new show, Service Maximum, did not do very well with viewers. It stopped being broadcast in February 2009. However, Julien Courbet continued to work for France Télévisions, the group that owns France 2.
Continuing with France Télévisions
After Service Maximum, Julien Courbet kept hosting his consumer defense show on RTL radio. He also started presenting fun entertainment and game shows on TV. In May 2009, he helped commentate the 54th Eurovision Song Contest from Moscow. In June 2009, he hosted Le Grand défi des animateurs (The Great Presenters' Challenge).
During the summer of 2009, he hosted the game show Le 4e duel (The 4th Duel) every weekday evening. Later, he presented another game show called En toutes lettres (In All Letters) on France 2. He first hosted it alone, then with Pierre Bellemare. In December 2009, he presented Soyons sport ! (Let's Be Sporty!) for the Téléthon charity event. He hosted it with Amel Bent and Sophie Davant. In summer 2010, he hosted Le 4e duel again, but this time on weekends.
He also kept producing shows for TF1. These included Tous ensemble (All Together) since 2009, Abus de confiance (Breach of Trust) since July 2010, and Voisins, vont-ils se mettre d'accord (Neighbors, Will They Agree?) since October 2010. This last show featured former tennis player Henri Leconte. In September 2010, he continued hosting En toutes lettres and Le 4e duel. In December 2010, he presented another season of Le Grand défi des animateurs.
In June 2011, he hosted Code de la route : À vous de jouer (Highway Code: Your Turn to Play). In September 2011, he presented Seriez-vous un bon expert ? (Would You Be a Good Expert?) on France 2. In May 2012, he hosted La grande révision (The Big Revision) on the same channel. In June, he presented another season of Le 4e duel.
