Julien Joseph Monette (1836 - 1886) was an important person in American history. He was a soldier during the American Civil War and later became a politician. He served in the Louisiana State Senate during a time called the Reconstruction era.

Early Life and Military Service

Julien Joseph Monette was born in 1836. His father, Pierre Monette, came from Haiti. His mother was Louise Boulin.

During the American Civil War, Julien Monette was a brave captain. He served in the 6th Louisiana Volunteers.

Political Career in Louisiana

After the war, Monette became a politician. In 1868, he was elected to the Louisiana State Senate. He represented the third district, which included parts of New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish.

As a senator, he worked on important committees. For example, he was part of the Committee on Finance. This committee dealt with money matters for the state.

Monette was a member of the Republican Party. He worked with other senators to make changes in Louisiana. He was also a partner in the Mississippi River Packet Company. This was a business owned by Black individuals, including other senators like Caesar Antoine and P. B. S. Pinchback.

Re-election and Later Years

Monette ran for the senate again in 1876. He was nominated by the Republican Party. Even though he initially lost, he challenged the results. In March 1877, the senate decided that he should be seated. This meant he won his seat back.

After the Reconstruction era ended, Julien Monette left Louisiana. He moved to Central America. He passed away in Panama in 1886.

Julien Joseph Monette was also the maternal grandfather of a famous musician, Jelly Roll Morton.
