Julio Valdeón Baruque (born in Olmedo, Province of Valladolid, on July 21, 1936 – died in Valladolid on June 21, 2009) was a very important historian from Spain. He spent his life studying and teaching about the past, especially the Middle Ages in Spain.

Life as a Historian and Teacher

Julio Valdeón Baruque studied at the University of Valladolid. There, he earned a degree in History and later a PhD. A PhD is a very high academic degree that shows someone is an expert in their field.

From 1967 to 1971, he was a professor of Medieval History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Medieval History is the study of the Middle Ages, a period in history from about the 5th to the 15th century.

He then taught at the University of Seville from 1971 to 1973. After that, he returned to the University of Valladolid in 1973. He became a full professor of Medieval History there.

Between 1981 and 1984, he was the dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Valladolid. A dean is like a principal for a specific part of a university. He also led the Department of Medieval History. Many students who became famous historians learned from him.

Julio Valdeón Baruque also helped with important publications. He was a founder and chairman of the Ambito publishing company. He was also on the board for the newspaper El Mundo and the magazine Historia16.

In 1994, he helped organize an exhibition called El testamento de Adán. In 2002, he became the director of the Institute of History of Simancas. This institute is a place where historians do research.

A big honor came on November 16, 2001, when he was chosen to be a full member of the Real Academia de la Historia. This is a very old and respected group of historians in Spain. He officially joined in June 2002.

He was known as one of the best experts in Spain on the late Middle Ages, especially in the Crown of Castile. This was a powerful kingdom in what is now Spain.

Julio Valdeón Baruque was also the father of the novelist Julio Valdeón Blanco. He passed away in Valladolid on June 21, 2009.

Awards and Recognitions

Julio Valdeón Baruque received several important awards for his work:

  • In February 2002, he was given the Castile and León Award for Social Sciences and Humanities. This award recognized his research on the Middle Ages and his dedication to teaching.
  • In 2004, he won the National History Award of Spain. He received this for his book titled Alfonso X: la forja de la España moderna. This book was about King Alfonso X, an important ruler in Spanish history.
