Juma Sultan (born April 13, 1942) is a talented jazz musician. He often plays the drums (percussionist) or the bass guitar. Many people know him for playing with the famous musician Jimi Hendrix at the Woodstock festival in 1969. Today, Juma plays with groups like Sankofa, Sons of Thunder, and his own Juma Sultan Band.

His Musical Journey

Juma Sultan was born in Monrovia, California, on April 13, 1942. In 1969, he played with Jimi Hendrix's band, Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, at the famous Woodstock festival. He also appeared on The Dick Cavett Show and at a special concert in Harlem, New York. Juma was interviewed for important films about Jimi Hendrix, including Jimi Hendrix and Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock. He can be heard on about 12 of Jimi Hendrix's albums released after Hendrix passed away.

Juma Sultan is skilled in many types of music, like jazz, rock, blues, and spirituals. He has been performing, producing, and recording music for many decades.

In 2006, Clarkson University worked with Juma Sultan to get a special grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. This money helped them save Juma's recordings and videos of a unique style of jazz called "avant-garde jazz" from the 1960s and 1970s. You can see this collection online at www.jumasarchive.org.
