Jumada al-Awwal (which means "The initial Jumada" in Arabic) is the fifth month in the Islamic calendar. It is also sometimes called Jumada al-Ula or Jumada I. This month can have either 29 or 30 days.
The name "Jumada" might come from an Arabic word meaning "dry" or "cold." This could refer to a time when the land was very dry in pre-Islamic Arabia. Another idea is that it relates to a verb meaning "to freeze," suggesting water would freeze during this part of the year. However, some people disagree with this idea. This is because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, so its months do not stay in the same season each year like solar calendars do.
In the past, during the Ottoman Empire, this month was known as Jèmāzìyyu-'l-èvvel or G̃émazi lèlèvvèl. Today, in Turkish, it is spelled Cemaziyelevvel.
Understanding the Islamic Calendar
The Islamic calendar is different from the calendar most of the world uses. It is a purely lunar calendar. This means that each month begins when people first see the thin crescent of a new moon.
Because the Islamic lunar year is about 11 to 12 days shorter than the solar year, the months move through the seasons. So, Jumada al-Awwal will happen at different times of the year over time. It takes about 33 solar years for the months to cycle completely through all the seasons.
