Jung Hong-won (Hangul: 정홍원) was a very important politician in South Korea. He was born on October 9, 1944. He served as the prime minister of South Korea from 2013 to 2015. He worked under President Park Geun-hye. Jung Hong-won was a member of the Saenuri Party.

Early Life and Education
Jung Hong-won studied law at Sungkyunkwan University. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree. After finishing his studies, he passed a special exam. This exam allowed him to become a prosecutor. A prosecutor is a lawyer who works for the government. They help bring people who break laws to justice.
Career as a Prosecutor
Jung Hong-won became well-known for his work as a prosecutor. He handled several important legal cases. For example, he worked on cases involving relatives of President Chun Doo-hwan. He also worked on the Walker Hill Casino case. His work helped him gain a good reputation.
Moving to Public Service
In 2003, Jung Hong-won left his job as a prosecutor. He then became the president of the Institute of Justice. This institute helps train people in legal professions. From 2004 to 2006, he served as a commissioner. He worked for the National Election Commission of South Korea. This group makes sure elections are fair. Later, from 2008 to 2011, he led the Korea Legal Aid Corporation. This organization helps people get legal advice.
Becoming Prime Minister
Before the 2012 general election, Jung Hong-won joined the Saenuri Party. On February 8, 2013, he was chosen to be the first Prime Minister. He was nominated by President-elect Park Geun-hye. The National Assembly of South Korea approved his nomination. He officially became Prime Minister on February 26, 2013.
Challenges and Resignation
On April 27, 2014, Jung Hong-won offered to resign. This was after the tragic Sinking of the MV Sewol. The Sewol ferry sank on April 16, 2014. More than 300 people lost their lives in this accident. President Park accepted his resignation in principle. However, Jung continued to lead the government for a while. He stayed in his role during the search and rescue efforts. It was hard to find someone to replace him.
Jung Hong-won was formally replaced as Prime Minister on February 16, 2015.
