Juozas Miltinis (born September 3, 1907, in Akmenė, Lithuania – died July 13, 1994, in Panevėžys, Lithuania) was a famous Lithuanian theatre director and actor. He founded the well-known Juozas Miltinis Drama Theatre in Panevėžys. Miltinis helped many young actors become successful during his career.
Juozas Miltinis: His Life Story
Juozas Miltinis loved theatre from a young age. He went to Paris to study theatre in 1932. He learned from great teachers like Charles Dullin and Jacques Copeau. After returning to Kaunas, Miltinis started his own theatre studio. He shared the ideas he learned in Paris. He also studied in London in 1937 and 1938.
The Panevėžys Drama Theatre was created in 1940. Miltinis became its main art director. Many of the young actors in this new theatre were his former students.
In 1954, Miltinis was removed from his director's job. This happened because of different ideas about theatre. He returned to his position in 1959. Miltinis then put his new theatre ideas, which he brought from Paris, into practice. He changed how plays were presented and how characters were shown. Miltinis retired from his work in 1980.
His Lasting Impact
Juozas Miltinis helped many actors become famous in Lithuania. Some of the most well-known actors he trained include Donatas Banionis, Vaclovas Blėdis, Gediminas Karka, and Eugenija Šulgaitė.
The Panevėžys County library keeps many of Juozas Miltinis's writings and works. On October 8, 2007, a special statue of Juozas Miltinis was put up in the main square of Panevežys. This statue honors his important contributions to theatre.
