The Juraj Dobrila University of Pula (which in Croatian is Sveučilište Jurja Dobrile u Puli) is a public university. It is located in the city of Pula, Croatia. The university was officially started in 2006. It has eleven different parts, like schools or departments, where students can learn many subjects.
History of the University
Starting the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula in the early 2000s was a big step. It helped improve how higher education worked in Croatia. Bringing different schools together to form one university was a challenging but important project. The university's creation also considered the long history and culture of the Istria region.
In the 1950s, people in Istria wanted more opportunities for higher education. They especially wanted to train people for jobs in economics and teaching. Two important thinkers from Istria, Mijo Mirković and Tone Peruško, helped make this happen.
Thanks to Mirković, the first two-year economics college opened in 1960. It was called the Higher School of Economics. Then, in 1961, Peruško helped open the Pedagogic Academy. Peruško was also the first leader of this academy.
Over time, the Higher School of Economics grew into the Faculty of Economics and Tourism "Dr. Mijo Mirković". The Pedagogic Academy became the Faculty of Philosophy in Pula and a teacher training college. Mijo Mirković even suggested creating an "Adriatic University." This university would have included schools in major cities along the coast.
Opening these two higher education schools in Istria in the 1960s made a lot of sense. It fit with the plans for the area's future. The main ideas were to develop the economy and improve education. These goals are still important today. Now, there are many new courses and specializations. For example, studying economics now includes finance, marketing, and tourism. Education studies offer more than just teacher training. They also include subjects like Croatian language and literature, Italian language and literature, history, and Latin language and literature. These new studies help students become teachers or work in other fields.
The Juraj Dobrila University of Pula was officially founded on September 29, 2006. This happened when the Croatian Parliament passed a law to create it. The university was then officially registered on December 21, 2006. This gave it its legal status.
