Justine Triet (born July 17, 1978) is a famous French film director, screenwriter, and editor. As a director, she guides the actors and the film crew to bring a story to life. As a screenwriter, she writes the story and dialogue for the movie.
Triet is best known for her 2023 film Anatomy of a Fall. This movie won many of the world's most important film awards. These include the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, an Academy Award (also known as an Oscar), a BAFTA Award, and two Golden Globe Awards.
Her first movies were short documentaries that looked at important social issues in France. She later began making feature films with actors, starting with the comedy-drama Age of Panic in 2013. She followed this with the movies In Bed with Victoria (2016) and Sibyl (2019).
With Anatomy of a Fall, Triet made history. She became the third woman ever to win the Palme d'Or. In 2024, she also became the first French woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. She won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the film.

Early Life and School
Justine Triet was born in Fécamp, a town in the north of France. She later moved to Paris to study art. She graduated from the famous Beaux-Arts de Paris, which is one of France's top art schools.
Career in Filmmaking
Early Documentary Films
Triet began her career by making documentaries. A documentary is a non-fiction film about real events and people. Her early films focused on social justice, which means fairness in society.
Her first film, Sur Place (2007), was about the large protests by young people in France in 2006. She also made a film called Solférino (2009), which looked at the 2007 French presidential election. These films showed events from a different point of view than what was seen on TV.
Making Story-Based Films
In 2012, Triet started making narrative films, which tell a fictional story. Her first feature film was Age of Panic (2013). It was shown at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and was named one of the top 10 films of the year by the famous French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma.
In 2016, she directed In Bed with Victoria, a romantic comedy-drama. This film was nominated for two César Awards, which are France's main film awards. In 2019, her film Sibyl was also shown at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or.
The Success of 'Anatomy of a Fall'
Triet's biggest success came in 2023 with her courtroom thriller Anatomy of a Fall. The film tells the story of a woman accused of her husband's murder, and their blind son is the only witness.
The movie won the Palme d'Or, the highest prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. This made Triet only the third woman director to ever win this award. The film went on to win awards all over the world.
- At the Golden Globe Awards, it won for Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film.
- At the BAFTA Awards, Triet won for Best Original Screenplay.
- At the Academy Awards, the film had five nominations, including for Best Picture. Triet won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Director.
- At the César Awards in France, the film won six awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for Triet.
Personal Life
Triet's partner is the French filmmaker Arthur Harari. They have two daughters together. Triet and Harari often work together on their film projects. They co-wrote the screenplay for Anatomy of a Fall.
Triet is a member of Collectif 50/50, a French group that works to achieve gender equality in the film industry.
Speaking Out at Cannes
When Triet accepted her Palme d'Or award in 2023, she made a speech that caused a lot of discussion. She showed her support for people protesting against the French government's new retirement laws. She said the government was hurting France's special culture of filmmaking.
Her speech was praised by some people, including other directors and left-wing politicians. However, it was criticized by others, including France's culture minister, Rima Abdul Malak, who called her comments unfair.
Later, some people in the film industry believed that Triet was "punished" for her speech. France's Oscar committee chose to submit a different film, The Taste of Things, to represent the country for the Best International Feature Film award instead of Anatomy of a Fall.
