Justine Alexandra Roberts Tunney (born in 1984) is an American software developer. She is known for creating computer programs and for her past involvement as an activist.

About Justine Tunney

Early Work and "Oogle"

Justine started making computer programs in 1998. She was very young, only about 14 years old, when she began publishing her software. She also enjoyed experimenting with online services like AOL.

Around 1999, Justine used the online name "Oogle." At that time, another person, Christopher Neuman, registered the website address oogle.com. Years later, in 2012, Google tried to get this website address. However, they did not meet all the rules set by ICANN, which manages internet addresses. Neuman said he registered the name because he wanted to work with Justine.

Involvement with Occupy Wall Street

In July 2011, Justine registered the Twitter account "@occupywallst" and the website address "occupywallst.org." These became important online places for the Occupy movement. This movement was a series of protests against economic inequality.

Working at Google and Solving Problems

In 2012, Justine began working at Google as a software engineer. She helped build and improve computer programs there.

A Petition for Change

In March 2014, Justine used a US government website called We the People. She created a petition asking for a public vote. Her idea was to explore new ways of running the government. She suggested that the technology industry could help with administration. She also proposed that Eric Schmidt, who was then a top leader at Google, could lead these efforts.

Fixing Software Security

In 2016, Justine found a security problem in a widely used piece of open-source software. This software was called an Apache Commons library. Many other software projects on GitHub (a place where developers share code) used this library.

Justine started sending out "pull requests." These are suggestions to fix code in open-source projects. She also asked 50 other Google employees to help. They worked on this during their "20% time," which is time Google allows employees to spend on their own projects. They used a tool called BigQuery to find all the projects that had this security problem. They found about 2,600 such projects! Justine noted that the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency was affected by this problem. It became a victim of ransomware, which is a type of computer attack.

Creating New Software Tools

Justine has also created some very clever software tools.

Redbean 2

She wrote a C library and web server called Redbean 2. What's special about it is that it can run on many different types of computers and operating systems. It does this as a single file, which is quite impressive. A technology news site, The Register, called it "a bunch of almost unbelievably clever tech tricks."

Cosmopolitan 3

On October 31, 2023, Justine released the third version of Cosmopolitan. This is a special C library that was used to create Redbean. Like Redbean, Cosmopolitan helps create a single computer file that can run on many different operating systems.
