Kovelamudi Raghavendra Rao (born on May 23, 1942) is a very famous Indian filmmaker. He is best known for directing movies in Telugu cinema, which is a big part of the Indian film industry. He has also directed some films in Hindi and Kannada languages.

Over more than forty years, he has directed over one hundred films! These movies cover many different types of stories, like romantic comedies, fantasy adventures, emotional dramas, action thrillers, and even movies about real people's lives. He has won many awards for his work, including four Nandi Awards and five Filmfare Awards South.

Raghavendra Rao won the state Nandi Award for Best Director for films like Bobbili Brahmanna (1984) and Pelli Sandadi (1996). He also won the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu for the drama film Prema Lekhalu (1977), the fantasy film Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari (1990), and the romance film Allari Priyudu (1993).

He is also known for directing films about important religious figures, called hagiographical films. Some of these include Annamayya (1997), which won two National Film Awards. This film was even shown at the 29th IFFI. He also won the Nandi Award and Filmfare Award for Best Direction for Annamayya. Other similar films he directed are Sri Manjunatha (2001), Sri Ramadasu (2006), Shirdi Sai (2012), and Om Namo Venkatesaya (2017), all of which received many state honors.

Some of his popular mainstream films, like the 1987 social drama Agni Putrudu and the 1988 romantic action film Aakhari Poratam, were shown at the 11th and 12th IFFI. In 1992, he directed the emotional drama Gharana Mogudu, which was also shown at the 24th IFFI. This film was the first Telugu film to earn over 10 crore rupees at the box office! After that, he directed the very popular film Allari Priyudu (1993), which was featured at the 25th IFFI.

Raghavendra Rao was born on May 23, 1942. His father was also a famous director named K. S. Prakash Rao, and his step-mother was Koteswaramma. Raghavendra Rao is also the father of Prakash Kovelamudi, who is an actor and filmmaker. From 2015 to 2019, Raghavendra Rao was an important member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Board.
