KJMM (which you can find at 105.3 FM) is a Mainstream Urban radio station that plays popular urban music. It serves the area around Tulsa, Oklahoma. The station is owned by Perry Broadcasting. It is officially based in Bixby, Oklahoma. Its main offices are in South Tulsa, and its broadcasting equipment is located southeast of Bixby.
Station History
KJMM started broadcasting on January 3, 1995. It was created to be an Urban Contemporary music station for Tulsa. This means it played popular music like Hip Hop and R&B.
Starting the "Power Jammin'" Network
KJMM was one of three new urban stations launched by Perry Broadcasting. This company focuses on media for the African-American community. The owner believed that this community was not getting enough attention from radio stations. The other two stations in this "Power Jammin'" network were KVSP in Oklahoma City and KJMZ in Lawton.
Music and Name Changes
Over the years, KJMM played many types of music. This included Hip Hop, R&B, Rap, and Gospel music. When it first started, the station was known as Fresh Jamz 105.
In 2004, KJMM changed its name. It became 105.3 K-Jamz. At this time, the station also started broadcasting the Doug Banks Morning Show. Another popular show, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, moved to its sister station, KGTO.
In December 2007, KJMM changed its morning show again. It began to feature Big Boy's Neighborhood, which came from Los Angeles. Later, the Rickey Smiley Morning Show took its place in the mornings.
