Perry Publishing and Broadcasting facts for kids
Perry Publishing and Broadcasting is a company in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It creates print media like newspapers, produces local cable television shows, and runs radio broadcasting stations. The company mainly serves the African American community in the area. Russell M. Perry is the owner and president of this important company.
How Perry Publishing Started
Perry Publishing was founded in April 1979 by Russell M. Perry. In the same month, the company began publishing a newspaper called the Black Chronicle. This newspaper is the oldest African-American community newspaper in Oklahoma. It shares news and stories important to the local Black community.
Growing into Radio
In 1993, Perry Publishing expanded its reach by buying its first radio station. This station was AM 1140 in Oklahoma City. It is now known as KRMP. Later, this station became KVSP. It was the first radio station in Oklahoma City to play "urban contemporary" music, which is a popular style of music.
Because KVSP was so successful, Perry Publishing soon bought another radio station, KJMM, in Tulsa. Today, the company runs radio stations in several cities across Oklahoma. This helps them connect with many different communities.
Expanding Radio Reach
In 2003, Perry Publishing built a very tall radio tower. This tower was 2,000 feet high and was located in Caddo County, Oklahoma. The new tower helped move the KRPT FM radio station into Oklahoma City. This made the station much more powerful, broadcasting with 100,000 watts! The call letters for KRPT FM were then changed to KVSP. This made the station's signal stronger and able to reach more listeners.
